Nazeing firefighters ‘have left Enviro Wood Recycling site’ confirm Essex County Fire and Rescue

A Nazeing wood pile fire has finally been extinguished a week after it sparked in Hoe Lane.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) confirmed at 5pm on Tuesday firefighters had left the Enviro Wood Recycling Ltd site.

The 30m by 60m pile caught fire on Tuesday, May 16 and eight fire appliances were initially called with firefighters remaining on site throughout.

A crew will revisit the site every 12 hours for the next few days to check the pile is still cool.

Nazeing politicians, including MP Robert Halfon, attacked the Environment Agency for not taking sufficient preventative action.

This was the fourth fire at the site with the third being only last August.

A nearby trader claimed the blaze may have been sparked after stock levels reached a level too high.

A spokesman from the Environment Agency said: “At a recent site inspection, our officers found that waste levels on site were near to, but still below the permitted tonnage.”
