‘Massive explosion’ as paraglider crashes into some power cables near Ashford
A paraglider crashed into power cables in Smeeth and caused a fire.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to Church Road, in Smeeth near Ashford, at 3.09pm this afternoon.
A paraglider had crashed into overhead power cables on take-off and caused some small fires.
The narrator of a video posted on the @Kent_999s Twitter account said: “I was lying there and then it went ‘BANG!’ and there was a massive explosion.
“Inside it all lit up and the cable went.
“No way, it would be my worst nightmare this happening.”
The male paraglider was released uninjured and crews extinguished the fires.
A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to Church Road, Smeeth near Ashford to an incident where a paraglider had collided with overhead power cables on take-off.
“On arrival crews found the male paraglider released and uninjured, although his canopy was still entangled resulting in small fires.
“Once the power cables had been isolated crews extinguished the fires and dampened down.”
The fire service had left the scene by 4.47pm.
