The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service has appointed Gary Thompson as its Chief Fire and Rescue Officer.

He takes up the new post from Monday.

Mr Thompson, originally from Antrim, has more than 22 years of experience in the organisation and most recently served as assistant chief fire officer and director of operations.

He said: “I am honoured to accept the position of Chief Fire and Rescue Officer.”

The NIFRS board congratulated Gary Thompson and described him as a “committed and dedicated firefighter” with “a wealth of operational and strategic leadership experience”.

Health Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “I welcome the appointment of Gary Thompson as Chief Fire and Rescue Officer for the Fire and Rescue Service.

“A substantive head of service will provide additional stability for the Fire and Rescue Service going forward.

“Gary brings with him a wealth of experience and I have no doubt that he will provide the necessary leadership to guide the Fire and Rescue Service through the challenges that lie ahead.”
