An innovative, charitable, not-for-profit organisation and film production agency led by young people from script to screen

Clapperboard UK is a registered charity which aims to bring film literacy and creativity into all aspects of film education – handling the whole process from script to screen, over to young people and their communities.

The charity delivers a highly successful youth-led industry which supports film-making projects, and to date, over one thousand young people have participated. The films produced are typically issue-based, radical, and thoroughly researched.

Clapperboard delivers its high standing work in partnership with schools, youth services, and professionals from the industry of film and television.

I am very happy to be screening my film, ‘Don’t Worry About Me’ as a fund raiser for Clapperboard UK. The inspirational work Clapperboard does with young people, helping them find a voice through the use of film, is fantastic!David Morrissey, Don’t Worry About Me – Nov 09

Clapperboard’s practice is aligned and informed by Asset Based Community Development, where experts are readily available and hold a belief that all individuals and communities have a role to play in helping themselves and others.

Clapperboard is committed to the new Department of Media & Culture Five Point Plan

These Five Points are:

■ A new programme to bring film education into every school, giving every pupil the chance to see, understand and learn about British film.

■ A call for the major broadcasters to invest more in the screening, acquisition and production of independent British film

■ Incentives ensuring a more collaborative approach between producers, directors and distributors which in turn will facilitate financing of projects

■ A strong commitment to combat piracy and illegal exploitation of intellectual property

■ A scheme to bring digital screens and projectors to village and community halls across the country

Active Citizens Panel

Clapperboard’s Active Citizens Panel (ACP) is made up of young people that are democratically elected by their peers, and are instrumental in evaluating, monitoring, and researching projects with the aim of deciding film topics. This much needed youth voice and democratic process enriches their own lives, as well as the lives of other excluded communities. The ACP decides on the themes of the films, based upon issues that affect their lives such as racism, sexuality and gender discrimination, and gun, knife, and gang culture.

Industry professionals supporting the project include: Paul Abbott, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Jimmy McGovern, Willy Russell, Alison Steadman, Ricky Tomlinson, David Morrissey, Ian Hart, Christine Tremarco, Colin McKeown, Margi Clarke, and Nik Powell.

The completed short films are judged by a panel of experts, and also receive awards presented by celebrities at an annual high-profile film premiere. The premiere is attended by a diverse audience, including; young individuals, their families and friends, partners, sponsors, etc.

Merseyside Police is delighted to partner Clapperboard. We work hard on enforcing the law, but we also have a firm focus on engagement and particularly supporting young people to stay safe and make decisions that are right for them and their communities. Clapperboard has supported our fight against violent crime and anti social behaviour. The innovation of young people and the various partnerships at play have had some excellent results. For example, the ‘Mischief’ production became a powerful tool at a challenging time of the year. Once again, we saw crime and anti social behaviour drop around the Bonfire night period which is great news for everyone.INSPECTOR COLIN LEWIS – Merseyside Police Youth Engagement Unit
